Champagne Delamotte Brut Review | Salon Quality at an Affordable Price
If you’re anything like me, when you start to hear Christmas music, your inner child gets excited while the grown-up part of you gets instantly stressed with everything the holiday season entails. Not the least of which entails finding elegant, well-crafted Champagne that will impress without also depressing you due to it’s price. But fortunately I may be able to help in at least this one critical area. In terms of sheer bang for the buck, the Costco Kirkland Signature Champagne I recently reviewed is an excellent option but sometimes you want something a little more special and prestigious to celebrate with. Today The Fermented Fruit is actually celebrating a small milestone itself (more on that later). These special occasions call for the Champagne Delamotte Brut.
If you haven’t heard of Champagne Delamotte yet then I’m glad you’re here. The Non-Vintage Delamotte Champagne is produced by a small Champagne house which just happens to be the sister winery of Champagne Salon. Champagne Salon is amongst the most exclusive, expensive and sought after Champagne’s in the world. It consistently scores near perfection by professional wine critics and it’s prices average approximately ~$400 per bottle according to Wine-searcher.
So if you’re wondering why you should care about Champagne Salon it’s because while Salon is only produced in the finest vintages, Champagne Delamotte is produced every single year. What does that mean for you as a consumer? You’re more than likely getting the incredible juice that would be used to make Salon Champagne when it isn’t being used to make Salon Champagne, for less than the price of Veuve Clicquot! Shall we see how special the Champagne Delamotte really is?
Appearance: Pale greenish yellow with a small to medium persistent bead.
Nose: Elegant and lively with honeysuckle, baked bread, apple and Meyer lemon.
On the palate: Medium to full bodied, this is sweetly fruited yet balanced with racy acidity. There is rich fresh honeysuckle, caramel apple, white truffle, sourdough and a great oily-citrus component on the clean and lively finish.
Varietal Composition: Blanc de Blanc, 100% Chardonnay
Origin: Vineyards located in Verzenay and Sezanne in Champagne, France
Value Rating: 4.5 / 5
Where I got it: Whole Foods in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Price: $44.99 (Retail was $60 but this is widely available for ~ $35 according to Wine-Searcher)
Should you buy? Yes! If you like Salon quality at a Hair Cuttery price then Champagne Delamotte can’t be beat.
Value Proposition – Champagne Delamotte Brut Review
Remember the milestone I mentioned that The Fermented Fruit had reached? This was the first time that it had reached 10,000 views in a month! While I hope to grow The Fermented Fruit even more, this was an important start and I want to thank all of those who have visited and those who visit regularly. On that note, I wanted to celebrate with some good bubbly and the Champagne Delamotte certainly fit the bill.
It’s easy to see why Robert Parker himself calls Champagne Delamotte “…one of the best buys in exquisitely crafted Champagne.” Champagne Delamotte has good complexity with impeccable balance and great tension for the money. Even if you aren’t getting a drop of the wine that would be used to make the Salon Champagne, the Champagne Delamotte is no slouch itself. You’re still getting a great wine crafted from grapes grown in the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. And did I mention that the house of Champagne Delamotte itself if the fifth oldest Champagne house, founded in 1760?
It might not be quite as easy to find as the ubiquitous Veuve Clicquot and Moet Chandon’s of the world, but sometimes it’s nice to drink something different, right? I mean just having a bottle of Delamotte Champagne and being able to share about it’s story and relation to sister wine Salon Champagne would make the extra effort worthwhile in my opinion! It’s an added bonus that you should be able to find it for even less than those other Champagne’s everyone has had.
